Anne Sophie van Riel is a Dutch violist with a passion for historical performance practice. She enjoys making music in a wide range of settings, from intimate chamber music ensembles to chamber orchestras and full symphonic productions.
She performs with several renowned groups, including the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Monteverdi Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, St. Gallen Bachstiftung, and Musiciens du Prince. Since 2024, she has been a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
Anne Sophie has a particular dedication to the performance practice of the late 18th and 19th centuries. She has taken part in productions and recordings of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre on period instruments with Concerto Köln and the Dresdner Festspielorchester. With her collective, Ensemble Ossian's Dream, she explores the chamber music repertoire of this era and its historical interpretation.
Over the years, she has performed at festivals such as the Zermatt Music Academy, Davos Festival, and Glyndebourne, collaborating with inspiring musicians and conductors including Christoph Eschenbach, Mayumi Hirasaki, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Dmitry Ablogin, Ádám Fischer, and Cecilia Bernardini.
Anne Sophie began her formal training at the School for Young Talent in The Hague, then moved to Freiburg to study with Professor Wolfram Christ (2017–2021). She completed her Master’s degree at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste with Professor Diemut Poppen (2021–2023), where she also developed a deep interest in early music. This led her to pursue a second Master’s degree in historical performance at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Amandine Beyer (2023–2025).
